Several years ago when I was engaged to Brian, (my then boyfriend, now husband) we had made plans to meet for dinner one evening. I had arrived early so I decided to go into a nearby store to kill time where I found this lovely jar on display:
I thought if was funny and casually mentioned it to Brian. It quickly left my mind and I never thought about it again. Christmas time was quickly approaching, (are you all following where I’m going with this story?) and I was so excited to see what my future husband was going to get me! A new pair of shoes? A shiny new watch? A gift certificate for a spa treatment? No. What I got was way more romantic than any girl could ever ask for! I got this:
The story goes on… When I opened it, I ALMOST laughed because I thought it was a joke! No, it was no joke. He was serious and he really thought I wanted it. He also wanted to be the special guy to give it to me.
I didn’t want to disappoint him, so he never really knew how I felt about the gift.
About a year had passed and we decided to adopt a kitten. Our pet kitten was a naughty kitten that I eventually made Brian get rid of after a month. It’s safe to say I am not a cat person. One day, I came home from work to find Brian looking really nervous and fidgety. I asked him what was wrong, dreading that something horrible had happened. He replied, “I know you are going to be very upset with the kitty!” He continued to explain how the cat had jumped onto the window ledge and knocked the boob job fund jar off breaking it into a million pieces! He then handed me the jar and all of the pieces had glued back together! Yep, couldn’t get rid of it to save my life.
The jar is still with us to this day. I plan to keep it forever. I don’t really put value in material things. I am not really a sentimental person in that way. BUT that boob job fund jar is truly one of my most prized possessions because of the lessons it has taught me. It has taken me 8 years to realize that my husband is a very sentimental person and he didn’t give me the jar because he wants me to get a boob job, he gave it to me because we had a great night and it was more of a reminder of that night.
I love to reflect and ponder this time of year and remember what and who I am most thankful for. This year, the what is the jar, and the who is my husband. During those times where I find myself upset with Brian, I will look at that jar and for some reason, it puts it all into perspective for me. I then find it easier to forgive and easier to love.
